Reinvest in Your Professional Development

Avoid a lapse in your AAMSE benefits by renewing your membership. Renewing is not just a reinvestment in AAMSE— it is a reinvestment in your professional development.

Maintain access to the programs and resources that are relevant to your career and remain part of AAMSE's nationwide network of medical society professionals by renewing your membership.

Renewing under the new membership structure

Beginning with the 2013 dues cycle, all renewals will take place under AAMSE's new membership structure.

Your organization has a designated main contact who will submit renewal information for the organization as a whole. During the renewal process, the main contact will submit basic information (name, title, email, phone number) for all individual staff members who are included in your organization's membership.

Based on the total number of staff included, the main contact will select your organization's membership tier level which will determine its annual dues.

Once your organization's membership renewal is processed, all individual members who have been AAMSE members in the past will be renewed, and any new members will be added to the organization's membership roster.

Renewing organizations are encouraged to add new staff to their memberships in order to expand the AAMSE network and enhance the member experience. Don't forget: cost-per-member decreases as you add more staff to your membership.

3 Easy Ways to Renew

*A link to the invoice generator can be found on the payment information page of the online membership application.

If you have any questions about renewing your membership, please contact the AAMSE Executive Office at aamse@aamse.org or (414) 221-9275.

We're Listening...

As the Annual Conference Program Committee (ACPC) came together last month in St. Louis at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Hotel, much emphasis was applied to what AAMSE members want and need. The question is: How do we know what you want or need?

After completion of the 2012 Annual Conference, all members (whether you attended or not) were sent a survey requesting feedback on the conference. Those who did attend were asked to comment on individual goals and expectations, quality of speakers, venue and networking opportunities. Conversely, those who were unable to attend were asked what factors influenced your decision. In addition, looking toward the 2013 Annual Conference, all members were asked to comment on the types of programming and specific topics you want to see in St. Louis.

Shortly after the post-conference survey, a call for topics was released. This call went to all current and past AAMSE members as well as Industry Partners and vendors and was also made available through links on the AAMSE website and social media channels. You not only offered terrific session topics, but even suggested specific, dynamic speakers! As the ACPC begins the educational programming for 2013, your comments and suggestions are not going un-noticed.

Your suggestions, coupled with core competencies that every medical society professional should have, have allowed the ACPC to take a strategic approach in meeting your needs. “Our goal is to make sure that every AAMSE member will experience a stellar and fun conference next summer. This includes making sure there is programming for each member based on their type of society, job function, length of time in their position and issues facing their physician community and their society,” says Susan D’Antoni of Montgomery County Medical Society, Chair of the ACPC. “The ACPC is member-focused and member-driven!”

As planning continues to make the 2013 Annual Conference programming a mixture of rich and timely content, we want you to know, we’re listening.

Mark your calendar now for the 2013 Annual Conference, July 17-20 in St. Louis!

Upcoming Webinar: ACA Implementation Post-SCOTUS

A Special EDWeb Event:

ACA Implementation Post-SCOTUS: Moving Forward

Thursday, August 16
10-11:30 AM CT
Cost: $50.00*

Featuring: Richard Deem, SVP, Advocacy, American Medical Association

AAMSE is hosting a special webinar to help medical societies understand the implications of the recent ruling to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The June 2012 Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decision left nearly all of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act intact, including the individual mandate. One policy change triggered by the Supreme Court decision would allow states to opt out of the law's expansion of Medicaid to cover childless adults up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. The Court's decision on Medicaid has left many in the healthcare community with more questions than answers.

This webinar will explore the implications of the Court's decision and what's next for physicians and their patients in implementation of the ACA.

Richard Deem, Senior Vice President of Advocacy at the American Medical Association, will discuss ACA implementation issues and will answer your questions during this special event.

For more information and to register, visit the webinar information page

* AAMSE members qualify for FREE registration. Check your email for additional details or contact aamse@aamse.org.

Matthew May - Featured Speaker

Meet Matt

You can call me Matt. I'm a blogger for the American Express OPEN Forum Ideas Hub which I reprint here. I've written three books, with the fourth, The Laws of Subtraction, coming out in a few months. I run a small creativity coaching agency called Edit Innovation (formerly Shibumi Creative Works).

I spent 8 years as an independent advisor to the U.S. corporate headquarters of Toyota. It changed my outlook on work and life. I learned how to learn and solve problems. I learned to "think lean". I learned the power of less. I took those lessons on the road to other organizations. Now I write, speak and coach others on creativity, innovation and design strategy.

Why Subtraction?

Lao Tzu said: "To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, subtract things every day."

When you remove just the right thing in just the right way, something good happens. That's my go-to philosophy, and this blog is dedicated to sharing it along with all the amazing things that amazing people are doing to improve the world by waging "war on more" through subtracting from our collective experience anything obviously excessive, wasteful, complicated, unnatural, hazardous, hard to use or ugly. Or better yet, refraining from adding those things in the first place!

Matthew E. May, MBA will be presenting session 302: Laws of Subtraction: 7 Rules for Getting More and Using Less and the 2012 AAMSE Annual Conference in Los Angeles.

Transforming the Practice of Medicine

Last month in Los Angeles, the X PRIZE Foundation hosted more than 100 influential CEOs, philanthropists, scientists, scholars and government leaders at its annual “Visioneering” event. These “Visioneers” gathered to design prize competitions that will drive radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.

Teams compete with one another to design and pitch innovative incentive prize concepts in Education, Global Development, Energy & Environment, Exploration and Life Sciences, in hopes that their idea will become the next X PRIZE. Prizes are interdisciplinary, incentivized competitions that motivate individuals, companies and teams to pioneer innovation that pushes the limit of what is currently possible to overcome today’s most challenging global issues.

The most recent Visoneering prize concept to be fully realized was the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE, an idea discussed at the event two years ago. In this competition, named for the Tricorder® of Star Trek® fame, teams will leverage technologies including artificial intelligence and wireless sensing to make medical diagnoses independent of a physician or healthcare provider.

Best known for the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE for private space flight and the $10 million Progressive Automotive X PRIZE for 100 mile-per-gallon equivalent cars, the Foundation also awarded the $2 million Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander X CHALLENGE for advanced rocket development and the $1.4 million Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE for highly effective, ocean surface oil spill cleanup methods. In addition to the Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE, active prizes include the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE and the $10 million Archon Genomics X PRIZE presented by Express Scripts.

Dr. Peter Diamandis, Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation, will be presenting a keynote address at the 2012 AAMSE Annual Conference, Thursday, July 19, 2012. In How to Succeed as Future Technologies Transform the Practice of Medicine, Dr. Diamandis explains how to incentivize breakthroughs and will provide concrete examples and lessons to explain how to create a culture of innovation within your organization. Join AAMSE in Los Angeles as we discover how to incentivize the outside world to help us solve our biggest problems. Dr. Diamandis’ personal motto is: “The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself!”

If You Say Anything...Say You're Coming

Today in Hollywood, John Cusack will receive the 2,469th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of Larry Edmunds Bookshop. Why place the star in front of a book shop? In his latest role, Cusack stars as the infamous author Edgar Allen Poe in the gothic thriller The Raven. John Cusack has reached the next level in his career. Here are a few highlights of how attending the 2012 Annual Conference will help you with yours:

Did someone say Poe?
During the conference, the AAMSE P.O.E. Award winners will be announced. Make sure you're there to be one of the first to congratulate them!

New Member / First Timer Program
No need to rely on Serendipity here - new members of AAMSE and first-time attendees will be paired with an AAMSE veteran, based on similar job function and/or organization type. This veteran will be your "go-to" person for any questions you may have about attending the conference for the first time, and will also introduce you to other AAMSE members.

Education is Two Thumbs Up
Have you been employed in the medical society field going on Sixteen Candles? Do you think you have learned all there is to know about medical society management? We guarantee you will discover new tools to tackle the issues and handle the unique challenges and opportunities facing your society. Our sessions are designed for and by medical society executives. Each session is chosen for its relevance, value and ability to advance your professional development.

Networking is Key
Networking takes place at receptions, meals and other miscellaneous events. However, the best networking at the conference is during the education sessions. Strong bonds are formed when someone says, "Come Stand By Me as we work to solve problems facing medical societies today."

And so, if you Say Anything about AAMSE, say you're coming to the 2012 Annual Conference!

Check out these titles and others starring John Cusack on IMDb.
