The Wainwright Building

Every Friday AAMSE's Gateway to Discovery will be featuring interesting information about the
2013 Annual Conference host city: St. Louis.

St. Louis is home to one of the world's first skyscrapers:  The Wainwright Building

Located at 701 Chestnut St. in downtown St. Louis

detailed panels on the Wainwright
The Wainwright building, built in 1891, was commissioned by Ellis Wainwright, a prominent St. Louis business man.  Designed by architect Louis H. Sullivan, the ten story skyscraper utilizes a load-bearing steel framework, a truly innovative technique compared to the heavy concrete buildings that were the norm during this time period.  Constructed out of red brick and terracotta panels, the Wainwright's large windows and highly decorative details add to the marvel of this beautiful building.

Added to the register of National Historic Landmarks in 1968, the Wainwright Building helped to usher in an era of architecture that would be continuously striving to reach new heights.

Make sure to register for the 2013 Annual Conference for the opportunity to attend high quality educational sessions and networking events where you can learn how to help your medical society reach new heights.
