You'll Lobby for Me Whether or Not I Join

Bob Harris, CAE, The Nonprofit Center

Non-members benefit from lobbying --- maybe you call them “freeloaders.”  I call it a “legislative welfare” program. We respond to their objections with rationale like: “your membership allows access to influence the process,” or, “your participation increases our clout.”
The fact is, successful lobbying benefits everyone, not only dues paying members.

Solving the Dilemma

The issue is how to make lobbying a member benefit; an activity respected by prospects and members alike.

Do this by transforming lobbying efforts and results into tangibles. A tangible benefit is one you can publish, sell, share, distribute and control. It positions the organization as a leader by managing and controlling the information.

Try these ideas to transform lobbying into tangible member benefits:

  • Compliance Manual – When a law is enacted, create a compliance manual that describes how the law came about, the exact wording, definitions, how to comply and where to go for help. Every law has a history and there is plenty of content to create a manual.
  • End of Session Report – A summary of the legislative session is valued by members and retained for reference. It summarizes the organization’s platform, efforts and results.
  • Legislative Directory – Create a legislative directory with contact information and committees of interest. Or, adapt an existing directory by imprinting the cover or inserting several center pages describing the organization’s issues or key bills. A legislative directory is an excellent member benefit and sellable to non-members.
  • Legislative Platform – The organization or lobbyist determines a legislative agenda for the upcoming session. Prepare the legislative platform in a brochure to inform members of issues and goals.
  • Legislative Audit Checklist – Most businesses comply with regulations enforced by multiple agencies. For example, a restaurant complies with licensing, smoking, safety, taxation, and labor laws, at a minimum. Describe all the regulations monitored and influenced by the association to create a legislative audit checklist. Distribute it to members annually as a checklist of the many laws requiring compliance. The checklist format serves as a practical guide to conformance.
  • Regulatory Audit Service – Expand the value of the legislative audit checklist by employing staff to visit with members who want help in understanding and complying with the laws influenced by the association. One great value of the audit service is that the association has an engaging relationship with members wanting help. A second advantage is the collection of data about compliance problems that will result in better lobbying.
To protect your lobbying program as a member benefit, consider ways to transform information into tangibles. Let non-members access the information at reasonable fees.

A Lesson from the Disney Playbook

By: Sheri Jacobs, CAE
Visit Sheri's blog at www.avenuemgroup.com

One of my favorite races, The Walt Disney World Marathon, offered a clever new way to give runners a race experience unlike any other. They partnered with the magazine, Runner's World to offer customized training plans, connections to experts and VIP treatment during the race weekend. Runners also received a private packet pick-up, exclusive pre-race walkout to the race start corrals, books and publications and an invitation for VIP access to a post-race celebration. Only a limited number of spaces are available and I've heard that the offer quickly sells out each year even though runners must pay an additional $300.

Can this approach work in the association world? Absolutely.

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) took a new approach to pricing a highly valued and often sold-out course that prepares individuals for the hospice and palliative medicine board certification exam. Similar to the approach taken by Disney or the airline industry, AAHPM staff created a pricing structure that offered practitioners the opportunity to attend the intensive board review course at a budget-friendly price (coach class) or with additional benefits (first class).

As part of the process, AAHPM staff identified a list of benefits that would provide additional value to attendees and provide a boost in revenue for the organization. In addition to offering member and nonmember prices to attend, AAHPM offered a limited number of "premium seats" for an additional $250. Participants who paid the extra fee received:

  • Reserved seating in the "preferred section" (the first five rows of the middle section of the room);
  • A special "express" registration line and entrance into the lecture hall;
  • A wine and cheese reception with course faculty; and
  • A special gift from AAHPM, including two popular AAHPM books (Primer of Palliative Care and the accompanying workbook), an AAHPM pen, mints and a Starbucks gift card.
The result? According to Steve Smith, CAE, AAHPM's executive director, AAHPM sold 120 of 126 premium seats prior to the course, generating an additional $25,000 in net revenue. On site, staff sold the last four seats and raffled two remaining seats to other attendees.

Great Ideas: TMA ROI Calculator

AAMSE is committed to sharing the innovative and effective work of its members in all areas of medical society management as part of its “Great Ideas” series. These case studies not only recognize member organizations’ creative and successful projects, but serve to inspire new ideas for the entire medical society community, helping AAMSE meet its mission of advancing the industry through communication of knowledge.

Great Idea: TMA Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator

Category: Membership

Organization: Texas Medical Association

The Situation:
Illustrating clear return on investment (ROI) of membership dues is a challenge all medical associations face– a challenge that is only growing with increased competition for dues dollars and the changing landscape of physician employment. Without demonstrating the value of membership, medical associations run the risk of seeing costly declines in their retention rates and losing out on potential new members who may not see the worth in joining.

The Idea:

Texas Medical Association (TMA) was looking for a way to demonstrate the real-dollar value of membership to physicians across the state. Their idea? The TMA Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator– an online tool developed to help Texas physicians learn more about the true value of TMA membership and the benefits offered by the association.

The ROI Calculator provides a list of member benefits and services with assigned dollar values and allows users to customize the tool to their personal use and experience. The user can see how the values were calculated for each item, learn more about the individual products and services (each benefit listed is linked to the web page featuring that service), and find out how to access benefits and services to get the most of their membership (i.e., increasing their ROI).

All members see a value higher than their dues paid when accessing the tool as selected benefit values have been “hard coded” to reflect the benefit all physicians have received (e.g., Tort Reform). Therefore, users of the calculator will see value in TMA membership even before they customize the app based on their use.

The calculator tool is updated at least annually and is featured in TMA renewal and recruitment campaigns to ensure current and prospective members see the value the association provides. The calculator is also a valuable tool to assist TMA and county staff when speaking about the value proposition of membership.

To broaden the reach of the ROI Calculator, TMA worked with county medical societies throughout the state to help promote the tool. The calculator is featured in county society newsletters, publications (via TMA created copy-ready ads), emails and websites.
To keep up with the growing population of mobile device users, Texas Medical Association is planning to launch a mobile-friendly version of the ROI Calculator in May 2013.

The Means:
TMA’s ROI Calculator was developed in-house by an internal team including Robert Hamilton, Internet Developer, TMA Business Intelligence and Software Development; Claire Duncan, Director, TMA Knowledge Center; and Sylvia Salazar, Director, TMA Membership Development.

TMA’s Internet Developer spent about 40 hours on the project, including planning, development and revisions. Other staff spent approximately 45 hours researching similar ROI calculators, gathering data on the value of each benefit featured, testing the site, and working with the developer to finalize the tool.

The Impact:

TMA uses Google Analytics to track calculator web page activity. Since the launch of the ROI Calculator on August 2, 2011, the following results have been measured:
  • 3,657 pageviews including 1,329 unique pageviews
  • 82% of users stayed on the TMA website after visiting the ROI Calculator
  • After viewing the calculator, 9.43% of users navigated to TMA's join/renew page and 10.58% navigated to the member login and dues invoice page
TMA's retention rate remains a healthy 95 percent.
"I was surprised to learn just how much value TMA offers me. Even the services I take for granted are worth a lot more than I realized."
-N. Keith Robinson, Jr., MD, Internal Medicine, TMA member

The Lesson:

Putting real-dollar values on your member benefits can go a long way in retaining and recruiting members– and providing a tool by which members can see the true value of their membership is critical. While there will be some legwork in the development and launch process, demonstrating the ROI of your association’s services is sure to result in ROI of your own.

We're Listening...

As the Annual Conference Program Committee (ACPC) came together last month in St. Louis at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Hotel, much emphasis was applied to what AAMSE members want and need. The question is: How do we know what you want or need?

After completion of the 2012 Annual Conference, all members (whether you attended or not) were sent a survey requesting feedback on the conference. Those who did attend were asked to comment on individual goals and expectations, quality of speakers, venue and networking opportunities. Conversely, those who were unable to attend were asked what factors influenced your decision. In addition, looking toward the 2013 Annual Conference, all members were asked to comment on the types of programming and specific topics you want to see in St. Louis.

Shortly after the post-conference survey, a call for topics was released. This call went to all current and past AAMSE members as well as Industry Partners and vendors and was also made available through links on the AAMSE website and social media channels. You not only offered terrific session topics, but even suggested specific, dynamic speakers! As the ACPC begins the educational programming for 2013, your comments and suggestions are not going un-noticed.

Your suggestions, coupled with core competencies that every medical society professional should have, have allowed the ACPC to take a strategic approach in meeting your needs. “Our goal is to make sure that every AAMSE member will experience a stellar and fun conference next summer. This includes making sure there is programming for each member based on their type of society, job function, length of time in their position and issues facing their physician community and their society,” says Susan D’Antoni of Montgomery County Medical Society, Chair of the ACPC. “The ACPC is member-focused and member-driven!”

As planning continues to make the 2013 Annual Conference programming a mixture of rich and timely content, we want you to know, we’re listening.

Mark your calendar now for the 2013 Annual Conference, July 17-20 in St. Louis!
